April 29, 2024 (YORK REGION)Circular Innovation Council, a national not-for-profit organization focused on accelerating Canada’s transition toward a circular economy, has expanded its virtual community hub in partnership with Peel and York Regions.

Initially launched by Circular Innovation Council in 2022 with support from York Region’s Circular Economy Initiatives Fund, the Share, Reuse, Repair Hub is a community-based virtual resource that offers easy access to find information that enables share, reuse, and repair. It also offers local businesses an opportunity to promote their contribution to the circular economy.

The Hub has added many new businesses, resources, and events in York Region, and has added the first round of businesses and resources in Peel Region. Featuring a new logo and refreshed website design, the updated Share, Reuse, Repair Hub now includes:

  • A directory of 250+ businesses, organizations, and events in York and Peel Regions.
  • A new map that allows users to find businesses based on location and categories.
  • Educational information about how different business models support the circular economy.
  • Listing of local events like repair cafés, swaps, curbside giveaways, and collection drives.
  • 30+ informative virtual resources.
  • Promotional opportunities for local businesses to showcase their sustainable efforts to the local community.

Over the coming months, local businesses in York Region and its municipalities—Markham, Vaughan, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora, King, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and Whitchurch-Stouffville — will soon be able to promote their involvement in the Hub by sharing promotional materials such as posters and stickers for their shops. Businesses and organizations that are not currently listed in the directory and want to get involved are encouraged to reach out to Circular Innovation Council by emailing [email protected] or submit a request form to be added to the Hub.

Circular Innovation Council plans to continue expanding the Hub to additional communities across Canada and encourages any interested municipalities to contact them by emailing [email protected].

“We are thrilled to be continuing our work with York Region to grow our Share, Reuse, Repair Hub.  Their continued support demonstrates the Region’s commitment to stimulating the local circular economy,” says Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of Circular Innovation Council. “Share, reuse, and repair are simple – yet essential actions we can easily incorporate into our lives to extend the life of products we use every day. Connecting our communities with the necessary information to seek options that promote share, reuse, repair is critical for driving behaviour change away from our current take-make-waste mindset. We are looking forward to bringing this important resource to additional communities across Canada.”

“York Region continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to waste reduction. Through community partnerships like the Circular Innovation Council, we’ve reduced waste generation and promoted sustainable practices. As we shift from single-use items to a circular economy, our Circular Economy Roadmap and programs like Share, Reuse, Repair Hub, Repair Café and Lendery highlight our commitment to a world where nothing goes to waste.”
