Circular Innovation Council expands its virtual Share Reuse Repair Hub to Durham Region.

April 1, 2024 (Whitby, ON):

Circular Innovation Council, a national not-for-profit organization focused on accelerating Canada’s transition toward a circular economy, has partnered with The Regional Municipality of Durham to expand its Share Reuse Repair Hub.

Building on its success in York and Peel Regions since 2022, the Hub now includes over 160 new listings from across Durham Region, providing information for residents to reduce their environmental impact, save money, support the local economy, and build community.

It also offers small-to-medium Canadian businesses an opportunity to showcase their contribution to the circular, local economy.

The Hub, which already had hundreds of existing listings from participating nearby regions, has expanded to include over 500 map pins, upcoming events, and resources.

Features of the Hub

  • A directory of 500+ businesses, organizations, and events in York, Peel, and Durham Regions that encourage sharing, reusing, and repairing of common items such as electronics, clothing, packaging, and household products.
  • An updated map with an all-new clustering feature that allows users to find businesses based on location and categories and get directions.
  • Educational information about how different circular business models contribute to the local economy, reduce waste, build community, and help tackle climate change.
  • Listing of local events like repair cafés, swaps, curbside giveaways, and collection drives.
  • Complimentary promotional opportunities for local businesses to showcase their sustainable efforts to the local community.

To help grow the Hub platform, eligible businesses in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge, and Whitby that are not currently listed in the directory and want to get involved are encouraged to reach out to Circular Innovation Council by emailing [email protected] or submit a request form to be considered for the Hub.

Circular Innovation Council plans to continue expanding the Hub to additional communities across Canada and encourages any interested municipalities to contact them by emailing [email protected].

“We are thrilled to be kicking off our work with Durham Region to grow our Share Reuse Repair Hub.  Their support demonstrates the Region’s commitment to stimulating the local circular economy,” says Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of Circular Innovation Council. “Share, reuse, and repair are simple yet essential actions we can easily incorporate into our lives to extend the life of products we use every day. Connecting our communities with the necessary information to seek options that promote share, reuse, repair is critical for driving behaviour change away from our current take-make-waste mindset. We are looking forward to continue bringing this important resource to additional communities across Canada.”

“Partnering with Circular Innovation Council in their Share, Reuse, Repair Hub supports our vision for Durham Region’s Long-term Waste Management Plan to reduce the amount of waste we create and manage the generated waste as a resource. The hub provides an avenue for local businesses and organizations in our community who are committed to preventing materials and products that are still of use from becoming waste. We are excited to be a part of this important initiative.”
