Champion of the Rental Economy
Vintage Tea Party Rentals

If you’ve ever wanted to throw a fancy tea party like the Mad Hatter, Vintage Tea Party Rentals might be the service for you!
Anna Rinaldo, the founder of Vintage Tea Party Rentals, journeyed into the circular economy with a love for collecting teacups. Thirteen years ago, she decided to use her cherished collection instead of just displaying it, sharing them with family and friends. The positive response sparked an idea: renting out her beautiful chinaware.
Within six months of putting a small ad online, Rinaldo’s hobby blossomed into a business. Starting with just 40 teacups and a teapot, she quickly expanded to meet the demand, noting customers’ particular fondness for delicate, hand-wash-only bone china . With delivery, pickup, and handwashing services offered, Rinaldo makes participating in the rental economy a breeze for consumers wanting to throw a fashionable party.
Inherently circular due to the rental model her business follows, Rinaldo was driven by a desire to keep these beautiful items out of landfills. These often-discarded, exquisitely-crafted tablewares of old offer an elegant alternative to disposable tableware. “It’s nice to see them being used and people appreciate the beauty of the china. At least it’s put to use, unlike disposable paper products that get thrown away!”
Waste reduction is central to Rinaldo’s operations. She transports her delicate items in repurposed plastic bins, always requesting the return of this packaging. Custom dividers ensure the teacups’ safe transportation, and she provides tablecloths that can be washed and reused between clients.
To ensure returns are made smoothly, clear signage on packages guides recipients on how to repack items for safe return. “Sometimes the person that orders isn’t the one receiving it, so I implemented labels with repackaging instructions on my containers so they don’t get damaged in transit. The signs provide guidance, as repacking instructions are often forgotten.”
Renting Anna’s teaware is not only environmentally conscious but also economical, saving clients time and the expense of sourcing similar items themselves. Good china can be pricey—with the opportunity to rent it instead, Rinaldo’s clients save money by renting instead of purchasing their own for occasional use. “It offers a more economical and time-saving alternative to sourcing these items,” she says, “for me, the hunt is enjoyable and rewarding.”
Looking ahead, Anna has recently expanded to include a collection of loose-leaf teas and compostable pyramid tea bags, all packaged in fully recyclable materials for purchase through the Vintage Tea Party Rentals online store, and welcomes donations of unwanted china, ensuring these items continue to be valued and used. Each returned teacup often brings a personal memory of where it came from. “Those downsizing kindly donate their china, knowing it will continue to be enjoyed by others. It keeps items from going to landfill. Whenever I see an item come back, I remember that person or where I found it.”
Her advice to others considering similar practices is to do their research and choose something they genuinely enjoy doing, whether or not it involves hands-on work like cleaning.
Anna Rinaldo’s teacup rental business beautifully illustrates how a passion for collecting stunning pieces, combined with a commitment to reuse, can create a sustainable and enriching enterprise, proving that circular economy principles can flourish in unexpected and delightful ways.
