With more than 25% of the world’s population of just over 8 billion people of menstruating age, at least 2 billion people generate a staggering 10.6 billion pounds of menstrual product waste each year. The Reusables Project is stitching change across Canada by offering a sustainable solution. Communities are coming together to sew reusable cloth pads—reducing plastic waste, restoring dignity, and ensuring consistent access to period products for years to come. Each pad sewn means less plastic waste in our landfills and more people with reliable, sustainable access to period products—bringing us one step closer to ending period poverty. But this project is more than sewing: it’s about rekindling a timeless skill, empowering youth, and weaving a tradition of care, resilience, and community back into Canadian homes.
Since 2021, the project has sewn ~8,000 pads, hosted over 140 free beginner classes and welcomed nearly 800 new sewists — with the majority of classes hosted in the GTA/Peel region.
